enclosure design of electronics equipment

The design of electronic equipment shell is a perfect combination of function and aesthetics.

From dust and water resistance to heat dissipation safety, every detail is related to user experience and equipment life. Whether it is the technological shell of a home computer or the solid protection of an industrial instrument, the design silently protects performance and safety.

The design of the shell of an electronic device is not only related to the appearance and personality of the product, but also carries many functions and needs. From the desktop computer host we see every day, TVs of different ages, to various industrial control instruments, each device has its own unique shell design. These designs not only meet the needs of different users, but also play a vital role in safety, heat dissipation, and installation convenience.

Next, we will explore the importance of electronic equipment shell design in depth and give you a comprehensive analysis of the considerations and mysteries behind it.

Appearance and function are equally important

As an indispensable part of our daily life, the shell design of the computer host is also full of knowledge. From the simple and elegant aluminum alloy material to the transparent design full of technology, each computer host conveys different information to users through its unique shell design. These designs not only affect the appearance of the product, but also play a vital role in heat dissipation performance, structural stability and user experience. Next, we will deeply analyze the multiple aspects of the computer host shell design to show you the design concept and ingenuity behind it.

As a must-have appliance in modern families, the design of LCD TVs also embodies the wisdom of many designers. From the thin and light appearance to the exquisite frame, every detail reflects the ingenuity of the design. These designs not only improve the beauty of the product, but also bring significant improvements in practicality, viewing experience, energy saving and environmental protection.

Equipment safety guarantee

In the industrial field, the design of control instruments is also very important. It is not only related to the normal operation of the equipment, but also directly affects production efficiency and safety. Designers need to comprehensively consider the durability, readability and functionality of the instrument to ensure that every detail can meet the stringent requirements of industrial production. Next, we will walk into the design world of industrial control instruments together to explore the design logic and technological innovation behind it.

When designing a shell or chassis for a device, we must consider multiple factors. These factors include not only the appearance aesthetics to maintain the iteration of the brand’s traditional characteristics, but also key performance such as dust and water resistance, electromagnetic shielding, and electrical insulation. At the same time, the convenience of installation and the heat dissipation performance of the casing are also important links in the design. Different types of equipment have different design focuses. For example, household appliances may focus more on beauty and safety, while industrial products may focus more on electromagnetic shielding and dust and water resistance. In addition, products used in automobiles need to pay special attention to the impact of temperature changes and mechanical vibration on their performance.

Ensure personal and equipment safety

In the design of the equipment casing, the first consideration is the dual safety protection of the operation and maintenance personnel and the equipment itself. Since many people may not know which parts of the equipment are charged, which areas are hot, and which places are strictly prohibited from touching, these potential risks must be fully considered during the design to prevent safety accidents or equipment damage caused by touching. At the same time, static electricity generated by the friction of clothing on the human body may also cause direct damage to the equipment, which will be discussed in detail in the electromagnetic compatibility section.

As an important part of safety protection, the grounding design of the chassis/casing plays a vital role in personal safety and the protection of the equipment itself. An excellent grounding design can not only significantly improve personal safety, but also effectively enhance the anti-interference performance of the equipment, providing strong guarantee for the stable operation of the equipment.

IP Protection (Ingress Protection) Standard

The IP protection (Ingress Protection) standard is an important indicator of the safety of electronic equipment. According to the product design standards of different countries and regions, the device housing must meet a certain IP protection level to ensure that it can resist the intrusion of dust and water. These standards include IP43, IP54, IP65, etc., which describe in detail the protection capabilities of the electronic device housing against dust and water. Specifically, the first digit of the IP protection level indicates the dust protection level, which is stipulated as follows:

No protection level

Level 1: Protection measures can prevent the intrusion of objects larger than 50mm.

Level 2: Further strengthen protection to prevent the intrusion of objects larger than 12mm.

Level 3: Provide more comprehensive protection to resist the full intrusion of objects larger than 2.5mm.

Level 4: The protection level is further improved to resist the intrusion of objects larger than 1.0mm.

Level 5: Although it is impossible to completely prevent dust intrusion, it ensures that the amount of intrusion is controlled at a level that does not affect the normal operation of the device.

Level 6: The highest level of dust protection, ensuring complete prevention of dust intrusion.

In the IP protection level, the second number represents the waterproof level, which ranges from no protection level, i.e. level 0, to level 8, which can be submerged in water indefinitely.

Heat dissipation and environmental adaptation

The use of metal casing for heat dissipation design is a key consideration for certain specific products. During the operation of the device, a large amount of heat will be generated, which must be quickly dissipated to the external environment. Otherwise, the internal temperature of the device will gradually increase, resulting in performance degradation, functional failure, and even equipment damage. For example, some brands of refrigerators or freezers that we often see will heat up when in use; there are also household photovoltaic inverters, whose casings are normal in the absence of sunlight, but when working under sunlight, the casing temperature will rise significantly.

In addition, there are many other requirements and precautions, such as the need for the housing to support and fix components and panels, electromagnetic shielding of special circuits or components, aesthetic design of the housing, optimization of the wind resistance of the housing channel, ensuring safe creepage distance, and anti-rust measures in high temperature and high humidity environments.
