What is a sheet metal panel

Definition and Core Characteristics of Sheet Metal Panels

Sheet metal panels are functional components formed from metal sheets (typically 0.5-6mm thick) through cold working. They offer advantages such as light weight, high strength, and low cost.

Their core characteristics include:

1. Material Diversity: Commonly used materials include cold-rolled steel (SPCC), stainless steel (SUS304), and aluminum (5052-H32), with cold-rolled steel accounting for over 60%.

2. Thickness Range: Industrial-grade sheet metal panels are typically 0.5-3mm thick, while those used in the construction industry can reach up to 6mm. Thinner panels are prone to deformation, while thicker ones increase processing difficulty.

3. Applications: Electronic device casings (such as server chassis), automotive body parts (doors, hoods), and building curtain walls, with the automotive industry accounting for approximately 35% of demand.

Detailed Explanation of the Six Key Processes in Sheet Metal Processing

1. Cutting:

Laser Cutting: With an accuracy of ±0.1mm, it is suitable for complex contours and can cut carbon steel at speeds up to 15m/min (TRUMPF laser equipment technical specifications).

Stamping: Highly efficient, but with high tooling costs, suitable for mass production.

2. Bending:

Use a CNC press brake, with a bending angle tolerance of ≤0.5°. Calculate the unfolded dimensions (K factor is typically 0.3-0.5).

3. Punching/Tapping:

Hole diameter ≥ 1.2 times the plate thickness (to prevent cracking). M3-M12 threaded holes are most common.

4. Welding:

Argon arc welding is used for stainless steel, CO₂ welding is used for carbon steel. Weld strength must reach at least 90% of the parent material.

5. Surface Treatment:

Plastic spraying (thickness 60-80μm), electroplating (galvanized layer 5-8μm), and salt spray testing for 48 hours to meet standards.

6. Assembly:

Use snap-fit, riveted, or bolted connections, with a tolerance of ±0.2mm.
