What is 45 Steel?

45 steel is a high-quality carbon structural steel

It is named because of its carbon content of about 0.45%. This steel has good mechanical properties and processing properties and is widely used in mechanical parts manufacturing, automobiles, diesel engines, boilers and other fields. 45 steel is a steel grade in the Chinese standard. The corresponding grades in the world are S45C in Japan, 1045 in the United States and C45 in Germany.

Chemical composition and mechanical properties

The chemical composition of 45 steel mainly includes carbon (C), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S) and silicon (Si). Among them, the carbon content is approximately between 0.42% and 0.50%. Its mechanical properties include tensile strength ≥600MPa, yield strength ≥355MPa, elongation after fracture ≥16%, and section shrinkage ≥40%.

This steel does not contain specially added alloying elements, but its performance is superior to that of ordinary carbon structural steel, and has the following characteristics:

Mechanical properties: 45 steel has high strength and hardness. After proper heat treatment (such as quenching and tempering), it can obtain good comprehensive mechanical properties, including tensile strength ≥600 MPa, yield strength ≥355 MPa, elongation ≥16%, section shrinkage ≥40%.

Processing performance:

It has good cutting performance and weldability, and is suitable for a variety of mechanical processing operations.

Wide application:

Due to its good comprehensive performance and cost-effectiveness, 45 steel is widely used in machinery manufacturing, automobiles, machine tools, construction, petrochemicals, mold manufacturing and other industries. It is often used to make shaft parts, gears, connecting rods, machine tool spindles, bolts, keys, pins, sleeves, medium and low-end plastic molds.

Heat treatment:

In order to improve and enhance its performance, 45 steel is often quenched and tempered (quenching and tempering) to achieve the required balance of hardness, strength and toughness.

45 steel is a cost-effective and widely used steel, especially suitable for the manufacture of structural parts that have certain requirements for mechanical properties but do not require special alloy elements to strengthen.
45 carbon steel has a wide range of applications in many industrial fields due to its good mechanical properties, processability and economy.

The following are some of the main uses of 45 steel:

Mechanical manufacturing industry: used to manufacture shafts, gears, connecting rods, bolts, keys, pins, sleeves, worms, spline shafts, drive shafts, hydraulic struts and other mechanical parts that bear medium loads in various types of mechanical equipment, as well as machine tool structural parts, machine tool spindles, machine tool beds.

Automotive industry:

manufacturing automobile drive shafts, half shafts, universal joints, steering knuckles, connecting rods, chassis parts, etc., these parts require good strength and toughness.

Construction industry:

Although not as common as specialized construction steel (such as Q235), 45 steel can also be used to manufacture light building structural parts, small parts of bridges, scaffolding connectors.

Mold manufacturing industry:

suitable for making medium and low load molds, such as the cavity, mold frame, guide column, guide sleeve, etc. of plastic molds, as well as the punch and die of simple stamping molds.

Petrochemical industry:

used to manufacture non-critical components of chemical equipment, such as container covers, brackets, flanges.

Household appliances and office equipment: used to manufacture electrical housings, internal structural parts of office equipment, such as printer rollers, copier parts.

Agricultural machinery:

used to manufacture non-critical transmission parts and structural parts on agricultural machinery such as tractors and combine harvesters.

Railway transportation:

also used in some parts of railway vehicles, such as fasteners and small structural parts.

Hardware products:

make various hardware tools, locks, door handles, hinges, etc., taking advantage of its good processability and moderate strength.

General machinery parts:

suitable for a large number of general parts that require good machining performance and a certain strength.

Of course, due to the low price, sufficient supply, and good mechanical properties and processing performance of 45 steel, it is the main metal material for the production of various mechanical parts, especially in occasions requiring high force and good wear resistance.
